Just a few spring photos. The Capri hasn't been out of the garage since October. With the baby being born and the cold/snowy days, its been tough. I must say the "amateur" paint looks pretty good. Started putting some color back on the Capri. The black trim is looking good, if I say so myself. Going with a Kustom Shop Flat Primer(56' Corvette Red) for the main part of the car. Going to Flat Black the hood and call it done. My goal is to have it done by the end of this month and have all of the trim back on the car. LATER...

It took me several years, but my patience paid off with a set of Weld Draglites for the rear along with a set of Mickey Thompson slicks. Why am I excited you ask. Those changes represented 44 pounds of weight off the car. Which brings the total weight lost off the car to.....765 pounds.

Figured the Capri was looking better, so we need to get the trailer looking better. I stained the boards this weekend and looking to paint it black. I wanted to go lime green, but the wife convinced me to stick with basic black. I should be done with that by next week.

Fiberglass and a little body filler and the rocker is looking pretty good. Good enough for the old car. It sure isn't perfect and I doubt it ever will be, but at least there isn't a hole I can stick my hand in. I think I have decided to go with a hot rod flat red primer and a hot rod flat black for the accent.(I'll put some color chips up as soon as I get them) It will look good and hide some of the imperfections. I also figured if its in primer people can't criticize my bodywork, because its not done. Its a WORK IN PROGRESS....LATER...

Something New

After doing some floor repair, I decided to treat the Capri with something new. $99 for some new carpet didn't seem bad and it will make the interior a little more comfortable, while still maintaining a stock appearance. I have got another surprise for the interior, but we will have to wait a few more days for that. HINT: Something old will be new again. LATER...

I have spent the last several hours placing a new carburetor to help deliver a bit more fuel down the cylinders of the old Capri. Let me tell you...WOW... I need to get to the track, as I can feel the extra power it has given the Capri. I spent about an hour fixing all of the leaks that the damn thing had. I think I have it adjusted pretty good. It may take some time, but this thing really could add some speed down the track. Now if I can fix the brakes. LATER...

It has been some time since I've taken the time to post about the Capri. The back is doing much better, but I still haven't been working on the car. I did realize that I never finished explaining the new item that is in the photo above. The suspense can now end for all of you hanging on the edge of your couch waiting to know what the hell is Paul doing now. What we have is what will soon go under the Capri and help me move down the track a little quicker. It is a 8.8 Ford differential loaded with 4.10 gears, Moser 31 spline axles, Moroso exrta-long wheel studs, and a Detroit Locker unit to finish it all up. Now the big task will be to drop out the old one and get the new one in. If you remember what a task it was to get the lower control arms out, this should be a SUPER FUN experience. LATER...

It's been almost a year to the date since I was confined to my bed with a herniated disk. Guess what? Its happening again and its really making me mad. It has been acting up and its actually causing pain in my right leg this time, along with the lower back. When will it end? I'm just posting to keep everyone informed and included a picture of the Capri to tide you over. Who knows when I will get back to work on the car. I might just give up and forget the car stuff all together. I'M FRUSTRATED!!! I HATE PAIN!!!

WARMING THINGS UP

Old man winter has arrived and I am behind the 8-ball, but I was able to get the shop a little warmer yesterday. I managed to put insulation in the pockets of the garage door. Its amazing the difference that made. You can put your hand on the doors and not feel the outside weather. My little propane heater raised the temp in the garage by 12 degrees on the low setting. When I get done doing some additional weatherproofing, I'm going to put that thing on high and see what it will do. It cranks out 80,000 BTU on the high setting. I won't get the ceiling complete, so I know lots of that heat is setting up in the rafters, but it stayed a comfortable 55 degrees. I'm thinking if I can keep a nice 50-60 degrees in the shop, I'll be getting several things done this winter.

I have been working on the Capri's brakes over the last several weeks. I'm converting over to manual brakes. I'm not sure if this is going to fix my braking issues, but its worth a try and it also helps lose 6 pounds with the removal of the power booster. I'll post more about that later.

It's amazing what you can accomplish with the right tools. I managed to get the drivers side spring and shock done in a few hours vs. the 3 days spent on the passenger side. A BIG thanks to Wes from work who let me borrow his spring compressor. Mine sucked. Its now in the trash!!! The engineers at Ford still suck, but thanks to having a better spring compressor life was easier and my hands don't look like ground meat. I will now get the brakes converted to a manual set-up and see if anything falls off :)

Oh yeah! Are you starting to figure it out yet? I still have a ways to go and a few more hints to drop you, but I think these photos will give you a big hint. I remember when I was a young man and would attempt to "clean" things up. I basically would grab spray paint and start shooting. How wrong was I? It definitely pays to prep your stuff before painting. Clean it, scuff it, clean it again, prime it, tack it, and then shoot your color. It really doesn't take that much more time and you really get a better look.

Yeah, I said it. The designers at Ford/Mercury are a bunch of retards. It takes a spring compressor, cutting wheel, breaker bar, pry bar, and a human body who's hands resemble ground chuck. Are you serious? I never ever want to change the front springs in a fox-body ever again and I'm not done. That was just one side. I will tackle the other side soon. I need to recover first. Well, I better get the performance that is claimed or I am going to be pissed!!! I installed drag springs, drag shocks (90/10) and new brake lines. The purpose of the springs and shocks are to transfer the weight to the rear of the car at "take-off" and the settle the front end back down quickly, so that you can boogie your way down the track more efficiently. Claims are .2 to .4. we shall see. LATER...

I've been working hard at work and not spending much time working on the car, but I've had time to sneak in the garage here and there. I have managed to remove another 6 pounds off the car. That's 721 pounds off the car now!!! I did this by taking off the wiper motor and the assembly. In doing this I noticed a crack in the windshield. HMMMM? I guess a lexan windshield replacement is coming, now that will be some weight savings. It looks like the Capri is getting closer and closer to becoming a full out drag car. LATER...

Just a quick post. I have been busy at work with the new position and have not had much time to even relax. Anyway, here is a new hauler for the Capri. Its a 1996 Chevy Silverado C3500. It has the 454 BIG BLOCK and 4L80E transmission. Its has a lowered suspension with Air Ride "air bags". I spent about 8 hours scrubbing the trucks interior. I have changed the tranny fluid,oil and spark plugs. It runs great now, but there is a small "tick" in the motor and its driving me crazy trying to figure out what it is. My wife is going to shoot me soon if I don't empty out the driveway. It was cheap I couldn't pass it up. The only thing it needs is some good LOUD exhaust. Hey, that could drowned out the "tick" I have? LATER...

HAULER GETS OLD/NEW SHOES

In case you don't know your urban slang. "Shoes" means rims/tires. There are only several people than can appreciate this photo. I spent today polishing the old rims I had bought for the truck about 3 years ago. Where? On Ebay. Cheap!! Cheap!! I went and got new center caps and lug nuts to finish them off. Not bad looking I must say. I am going to stick with 275/60 15 for the tire size. The old 454ss trucks had those for tires and since I am doing a 350ss look, its only natural that I use some of the same parts the 454ss used. Just a quick update on things. LATER...

HAULER UPDATE

Now that I have the Capri mostly together. I figured of would give some time to the old pick-up that hauls it to the track. I have had the truck for about a year now and I have done nothing other than some bodywork. Well, this evening I received boxes of parts from Jegs and Summit Racing. The parts included a set of Rapid Fire AC Delco spark plugs, Hypertech distributor cap & rotor, Hypertech performance coil, Hypertech power charger, intake tube, and a K&N filter. Wow!!! What a difference. The truck starts immediately and the throttle really snaps on the old truck. The single 3" exhaust I did sounds much better now. The old rotor cap looked like a coral reef inside(very crusty). The truck will probably get much better gas mileage too. I also added a MONSTER TACH to the truck, so I can watch the RPM's when towing. It looks cool. It was dark, so I'll take a picture at a later date. Oh, I also added some tunes to the truck, so that I can have something to listen to on the way to the track. The pictures give you an idea. LATER...

CUTTING THE WEIGHT

Ok, I almost lost track of the weight loss so far with the Capri. Believe it or not the "bubble" hatch weighed less than the Mustang hatch. I have not updated the weight loss since I switched out to an electric fan. Based on my calculations, I have lost about 715 pounds off the Capri. Most Capri's and Mustangs weighed about 3500 pounds from the factory. That should put the Capri at about 2785. I think KCIR might have a scale. I need to check that out. LATER...

I think I have found the reason for my back beginning to hurt again. I just realized that when you sand a car you have the tendency to bend to one side or twist. This is not good for my herniated disk. I need to come up with a way I can sand and still keep a straight back. I have been sanding over the last several weeks, and now, the back pain has returned. The car is coming along and it's looking pretty good. I'm going to take a break for a while, but next week I'm going to get some help to get the "bubble" hatch on. I need to give the back a break. Just a quick post to let everyone know I am still around and working on the Capri. I have been working on the Capri badge that goes on the rear deck lid. Anyone that knows the Capri badge, it should have some chrome on it. I figured that since the car will be such a bright red, it needs some good black accents. I also want a badge that says, Capri. I am getting sick of the people calling it a Mustang. There is also a mercury badge that goes on the back, but I'll leave that off for now. LATER...

I HAVE FOUND THE HOLY GRAIL

My travels throughout the world has led me to the elusive "bubble hatch" 1983 introduced the Capri to the "bubble hatch" which really set it apart from the mustang. It also provided better aerodynamics, which made the Capri the choice vehicle back in 1983 for Trans Am racing. Also, several mustang owners look for this to put on their car to help in the 1/4 mile times. Some say a .2 tenth time in the 1/4 mile. I can be a good student for this experiment when I get to the track again.
Anyway, the Internet is a great place. Over at the carbdford.com message board I posted a "wanted" message for a "bubble hatch." I got a response within several hours. A gentleman locally here in Kansas City said he had a RUST FREE one. RUST FREE is the big word here. These hatches for some reason loved to hold water and rust like crazy. That is what happened to the one that was originally on the Capri. Well, through some sanding I did find a pinhole of rust and I mean a pinhole. It is so small, I almost missed it. I treated it with some rust bullet paint and sprayed some primer on today. Oh, so I haven't finished my story. So, I get to the guys house and I noticed a familiar car in his driveway. It was a convertible mustang I had sold on Ebay. It so happened that this was the same guy I sold the car to him and his daughter about 2 years prior. Small world isn't it? For $75 we loaded it and off I went. By the way...Thanks Gene for the hatch!!! I have seen one in these good conditions go for $500-$1000, if you can find one. LATER...

If you look real close you can see some circles
and marks on the body panels. This is where I have located some
imperfections, etc. My brother-in-law gave me the idea of taking a
Sharpie and marking all of the areas that needed some additional work.
Turns out that this is a great idea, though it causes more work for me.

I AM SICK OF SANDING!!! You know what will suck about it? It still won't be perfect, but it will look better and I have to keep that in mind. I am not a professional! That's what I keep telling myself. Based on some stuff I see leave some paint shops, it will look pretty good. Today, I spent block sanding some panels with 320 and getting the panels primed with the same color and primer. I have been using different primer over the last 2 years and I want to make sure when its time to shoot the color ion the car it will help with getting the color uniform. LATER...

ALL PINNED DOWN

I've been setting around the house with CONJUNCTIVITIS(pink-eye) in simple terms. My wife has been gone since Thursday and I thought I could get lots of work completed at night when I came home from work. It was not to be. My eyes have been swollen and stuck together. That's a great feeling by the way. So, today I was feeling much better, though my eyes where stuck together after a long nights sleep. I decided to get the hood pins on today, as well as get the hood where it can be opened and closed with the factory hinges. Success!!! I also worked on getting more vacuum to the brake booster, so that I could have some better brakes. I went for a drive around the block and I was able to stop. I don't know if it will stop after hitting about 108mph, but will see. Hopefully sooner than later. LATER...

TIME TO REFUEL

Just a snapshot of the new fuel tank that will find its way strapped to the back of the Capri. Several folks have asked, "Why not put a fuel cell in?" It saves weight and you know how I am on a quest to save weight. Putting a fuel cell in would require me to cut some of the trunk pan out, which is something I want to avoid. One day someone might want to return this Capri back to its original glory and with only 200 of the Crimson Cat(s) being made in 1983, its possible that this will become a desired car in the future. My plan is to drop the old tank out tonight when I get off work and hopefully by Sunday I'll have the car up and running again. LATER...

FLASHBACK OF A LEAKY SITUATION

My gas tank repair finally gave out. It lasted 2 years...not bad. I will give it another repair before trying to replace the tank. A new tank it $125 and its not going to come out of my pocket yet. I'll repair it tomorrow....I hope.

The warm nights are upon us and the midnight oil is burning. I find that with my back injury I move much slower and can only do about a third of what I used to get done in the same amount of time. I have to take breaks (drink more beverages) to rest, so that I do not overdo it. As you can see by the pics, I have been working on the driver's door so I can get it back on the car. It would be nice to be able to take it out for a run or two, but I'm afraid they would frown upon a car without a door running at the track. LATER...

CRANKED UP

Another part to add to the collection. What we have here is 2M casting crankshaft to hold the bottom end of the motor together. It has been radiused, chamfered, indexed, and shot peened. It even came with the bearings. You have to love the small mom & pop machine shops that are out there. Guess what else? NO CORE CHARGE. It seems that your "big" parts stores want anywhere from $25-$95 for your old crank. This place didn't. It was also super cheap. LATER...

JUST A BIG AIR PUMP

That's all an engine is. It's one big air pump. How efficient it is will dictate how much power you can produce. Can I produce this power that I am seeking? I have no clue, but I am giving it a try. The picture shows my latest score on Ebay. $22.00 for the pistons and rods. The connecting rods are some Ford pieces, but look at Carroll Shelby and his ability to wind-up those small blocks of old. He did it with stock rods. The pistons are almost new. The guy I bought them from went with a forged bottom end because he was going to use nitrous..a lot of it. They are 9 to 1 compression and with the heads that I have they should yield about 9.8 to 1 or maybe 10 to 1. I have about 8.4 to 1 right now stock. Right there I should pick-up about a 5% increase in horsepower if nothing else changes. That is a compression only figure. That does not include the fact that I'll pick-up about 50HP from the heads alone. The rods and pistons weighed in at 2.85. One rod and piston was 2.90, but I shaved some of the rod to get it to the 2.85 of the others. Yes, I am going to do my best to balance the motor. I don't have all the fancy equipment, but I can get real close.

Had some time to do a little painting today. I finally got the drivers side jam done along with the inner fender area. The paint went on smooth with no issues. I am going to stay focused on getting the car put back together, so that I can take it to the track again. Can't really go to the track with half the car missing? Or can you?
Work has been hectic and it looks like the weekend coming up will be spent at the store and not working at home. We are close to hitting a milestone, so the extra work is worth the time. HAS IT BEEN 2 YEARS???

Wow, I just realized it has been two years since
I trailered the Capri home and started my quest to make it a race car
or something that looks like one. Over the past two years the Capri has
had some dramatic changes in both its appearance and performance. It
even made it to the track a time or two. I guarantee the progress will
be quick this year, as the addition of the garage is making a big
difference. As you can see, I was working on the other fender today. I managed to get it in primer before I was rudely interrupted by my wife to go help her with some garden work. I thought I had a back injury? I can't do garden work!!! Oh well...Later...

COMING TOGETHER

Hey!
Just a quick post to let you all know that things are coming together.
Things will be much slower this year, but I am determined to get things
done. As you can see I got the passenger side fender in primer and shot
the performance red on the inner fender. It starting to look like a car
again. My back obviously is slowing me down, but it will slowly come

BACK BOO BOO

Let me explain what has been going on lately. I guess years of wear and tear is taking its toll on me, especially my back. Why are you posting this on your car blog, some might ask? Well, if I'm broke, I can't do @#$%. I can't begin to tell you about the pain. The issue is I have spinal stenosis, herniated disk, and a cyst on my kidney. This all sounds great, doesn't it? The issue is coming from the L4 and L5 disks, which are causing the S1 nerve to be pinched. OH WHAT A FEELING. They are talking surgery, but I am looking at more therapeutic options. I have been out of work now for a week and the doctor won't let me go back until the 27th of this month. I am bored off my mind!!! Trust me I would love to be working on the Capri, but my back tells my otherwise. LATER...MAYBE???

This was another free score from my sister and her husband. I went and picked up a front clip for the Capri. The fenders are rust free and that is what counts. I began stripping and sanding this one. I want to get this one in primer before winter hits hard. I am not sure if I'll get the shop heated in time. LATER...

Here we go. What we have here is my new little project. I have way too many. I found a .30 over 302 block that was casualty of someone elses project that never got finished. I have spent some time cleaning it and doing a little painting. I have installed the cam bearings and most of the "block plugs" I put my aluminum heads on just to see what it will look like. Its going to look mean, we will see if it will run when I'm done. This is only my 2nd engine I've done. But, I will reference an old post. There is something about doing things yourself, just like the old hot rod guys. I am now currently trying to scavanger some additional parts to finish the bottom end. Seeing those heads on the block really gets me motivated to keep working. Keep watching because I am on a roll.

I know its not the Capri, but this truck has an impact on me getting to the track. My father has been "eyeballing" my 99' Silverado for a while now, so we did a swap. I got this 88' Silverado. The plans are simple. A nice solid silver color, tinted windows, sports mirrors, cowl hood, and lower the stance a little. It has a nice 350 motor and seems to run well. No rust on this side of the bed, but I ran into where there was some body damage. I'll make it look better, but I never seem to get it real straight. Oh well, there is some pleasure in doing it yourself. LATER...

Just got back from a trip to Iowa with Dan from work. I thought it was going to be an all day affair, but 2 1/2 hours both ways was pretty good time. Having a buddy to talk to passes the time. As you can see I scored a 3" cowl hood for the Capri. These are pretty rare to find, as the hood is only piece from a Mustang that won't work on a Capri. Mustang cowl hoods are a dime a dozen, but this one for the Capri was a great find. It has been worked over pretty well with additional support and it is ready to paint. There is some weight savings that comes with it. I have not weighed the factory hood and this one yet, but even with the additional layers of fiberglass, there is some weight savings, though it is much heavier than the average fiberglass hood. By the way, the guy I got it from had one COOOOOOL Capri. Mine will never look like his, but with the budget that I am on, I think mine looks pretty good. I made the trip up to Iowa in the F150 HARLEY truck you see in the pictures. It's the company vehicle, not mine. $30,000 for a truck seems a bit much for me, but the cool thing is I can drive anything under $35,000, not bad for almost 5 years of service. I think the Capri is looking better all the time. I just hope my sister doesn't want it back!!! LATER...

Have I said that having a garage is the coolest thing EVER!!! I can use all my tools. I can do things now that I would have never been able to do without the garage. Well, as you can see I have been doing some painting. I have went past the point of no return now. I think the color looks pretty good. I think I found the cheapest tire covers for painting. Just take a garbage bag and place them over the tires. Pretty ingenious I know. I bought a HVLP gun for painting. I have done little painting in the past, but I can say these things make the job easier and sprays paint pretty well. It also cuts down on the overspray and you use less material. I actually took the time to read the manual and it actually gave some great tips. It also helps that my brother-in-law has had his own shop forever and I always ask him LOTS of questions. Remember folks ALWAYS listen to people that have the knowledge, they can teach you everything you need to know. Then you need to just go do it. Well, that is about it for today. A NEW RED???

I have started to shoot the inner parts of the doors there new color!!! I have chose not to go with the original medium red that the Capri came with. I figured that all of the original "hot rod" guys painted there own stuff and so shall I. The red is a much brighter shade and goes on well. I have chose to also go with a single stage lacquer as they did back in the days. I chose the single stage because it is easier for a first timer to spray and if you spend the time prepping your area to paint it will turn out fine. I am really trying to do everything on the car myself. I see lots of these "garage builds" in the magazines. Are they really being built in the backyard garages of America? Or are they paying someone to do everything for them? Oh well, you can see I am doing this on a budget and doing it myself. It might not be the best, but it will continue to run faster and look better as I continue to complete this project. LATER...

With the rain today in KC. I decided to utilize the garage. It is so nice to work on stuff when the weather sucks. Before, I would just lounge in the house all day and be lazy. You can see by the pics I have been working on the passenger door. Look at that bare metal..MMMM...Its rust free. I decided to use paint stripper instead of sanding. It was much quicker and I wanted to make sure those doors really where rust free. This one looks great. It has a few dings, but I can take care of those. I was able to get a coat of primer on today as well. Looks pretty good. LATER...

It has been well over one month since my last post. I have been busy in all areas of my life. The biggest??? We are moving. I have to take advantage of my time before work to get some work done on the Capri. I decided to remove the mufflers from the car. This saves 24.5 pounds. It also makes the car sound more like the racer it is supposed to be. I'm curious if it will yield any power gains? With that 24.5 pounds, I am up to a 639 weight loss on the Capri. If I was looking to save weight to get better gas mileage, I would be doing one heck of a job. I am running out of weight loss options. Later...

I had some time to work on the Capri today, and look what I got done. I hooked up the electric fan, installed some of the guages, and even had time to get some switches installed to control everything. Just in the driveway, the fan seemed to keep the temperature at 190. I imagine with the car driving down the road it should function just as well. MY FIRST TIME

Just a quick post. I am going to attempt to rebuild my first carb. My first victim will be this Holley 3310. It is a 750 cfm carb. The one on the Capri now is a 600 cfm. With a single plane intake and the new heads, this carb should do pretty well. I'll play with it and the old carb to see which one proves to be the best.
As a side note. I changed the water pump out a while back, but a see it is leaking again. It looks like the timing cover is leaking though. I might have to replace it. I really hate FORD(S) design of the water pump area. LATER.....

LOOK AT MY REAR

I know the picture isn't pretty, but that my friends in an 8.8 "traction-lok" differential out of a 1990 Mustang GT. The tag is on the rear, so I'll attempt to identify the gears that it has in it. I had to drive a total of 5 hours, but I didn't have to take out a single bolt or load it in the truck. The gentleman I bought it from had already taken it out of the car and loaded it in my truck with his forklift. This unit should help plant the power that my newly acquired aluminum heads will be throwing at it. Of coarse, I'll clean it up, put on a fresh coat of paint, new axles, gears, girdle, and whatever else I think I could use. Later.....

A LITTLE ELBOW GREASE

With some tips from the folks over at the carbdford.com message board I have successfully done a pretty good cleaning on the Edelbrock Performer RPM aluminum heads. Lots of WD40, brass brushes, rags, and the softest 3M pads you can find. I also found that my gun cleaning kit came in handy as well. All they need now is a good blast of compressed air to ensure all of the little stuff has been blown out. That's about it for now. I am traveling to Camdenton, Missouri to pick-up a 8.8 differential. I'll keep you all posted on that build-up. It seems that I am going a little crazy on the parts gathering these cold winter days. Later....

HEAD INFO

Ok here is one of the heads after a cleaning. I wanted to list some of the info on this head so you can get an idea of the difference between the aluminum head vs the stock ford head.
Edlebrock spec:
1.90 Intake
1.60 Exhaust
170 Intake Runners
60 Exhaust Runner
Factory 302 Head( Not perfect but close)
1.78 Intake
1.46 Exhaust
125 Intake Runner
40 Exhaust Runner
As you can see some big differences in the Edelbrock head vs the stock head. The edelrock heads should be able to help the airflow. Remember, an engine is just a big airpump. You want air in and air out and you want to do it as efficiently as possible. Hopefully these heads will help with that. Later.......

The pictures say it all. I have aquired a set of Edelbrock Performer RPM Aluminum Heads. Not only with this shave 50 pounds of the front of the car, if I match up the heads with a good intake and a quality carb, I could see a 80-100 horsepower gain...WOW....I am sure some carnage is coming this racing season. The only downfall of the heads are that one head needs one intake bolt hole fixed. I paid about a 1/3 of what the heads cost new. They even came with roller rockers, which I can sell and get some money back. Later.....

The weight update. I am now at 614.5 pounds off the Capri and still looking. I can't wait to hit the track again and see if the improvements and weight loss improve my 1/4 mile times. I'M YOUR BIGGEST FAN...WAIT...WHAT FAN?

Well, the new year has brought some new projects. The biggest change that was made was the new water pump. The thing always had a small leak, so I went to the Summit catalog and went for a new pump....a QUALITY pump. This one is made by GMB and it has a little different design on the back of the pump, so it won't leak. Almost every older Ford I have had leaked on the bottom back of the pump. Hopefully, this one will do what it was designed to do. When I had everything off, I decided to eliminate the clutch fan and go with an electric fan. The clutch fan weighed 7 pounds. While I was at it I decided to also eliminate the belt tensioner. That thing weighed 4 pounds. I included a picture of it to show you how small it is, but it has some weight to it. That is 11 pounds that the engine doesn't have to drag around anymore. The electric fan I am looking at weighs 2 pounds, so I netted 9 pounds off this little project. NOSE JOB

What a beautiful December day in Kansas City. The day allowed me to get several things done I have been unable to do for a long time. We have some help at work and I have a few days off......WOW DAYS OFF IN A ROW...I almost forgot what days off where. Well, I removed the front nose off to get to the front bumper support. 39.5 pounds of weight came off the front. I included a picture of the support. It is actually was heavier than the rear support.
I also remove the clutch fan in the engine bay and I am going to look for an electric fan, this along with some pulley's should yield about 8-15 horsepower gain. I ran the engine without a fan. I can really tell the engine has some extra "UMPF". You get to know your car when you have worked on it as much as I have. The slightest change can either yield results or not. We will see what results I gain when I hit the track again. LATER......

WINTER DIET

Well, I really don't know where to begin. It has been a while since I've turned a wrench on the Capri, but that was a little different today. Work has been crazy, working 6 days per week, then you have the holidays, and no garage. That means little time for the Capri this winter. What a difference a day makes. It was 60 degrees today!!!
I removed some weight off the car today. There was not much involved and it only took me about an hour. I removed 34 pounds off the car today by removing the rear bumper support. I have also chose the battery you see in the picture. It has a weight of 13 pounds, which is 20 pounds lighter than your typical automotive battery. Since I.... don't want to move the battery to the back of the car, this was the most logical choice, as well as the cheapest. On average it will cost you about $100 to move your battery to the rear of the car, especially if you want to remain legal at the track, per NHRA rules. The battery about $69. So, that was worth 54 pounds today. I have lots of time to read now that old man winter has set in and I am looking for ways to remove that weight. The front bumper should yield the same weight loss as the rear, but it involves a little more work and since I will be putting new fenders and stuff on the front. I figured I would do it all at once.

OLD MAN WINTER

What a change of seasons! Three days ago it was 70+ degrees and now its like 7 degrees. The poor Capri!!! I am going to get a car cover for it. I have been starting the car about every three or four days to keep the juices running. I am going to rebuild a 750 carb soon, so i'll document that over the winter. This is my first attempt at a rebuild on a carb, so it should be intresting??? Sorry for the delay on the updates, but with weather like this, it makes it difficult for me to get motivated to work outside.

Ok, so I go out Wednesday morning before work and check out the ole' Capri to see if I can figure out what the TICK TICK TICK noise is after running at the track. Well, I pull the valve cover off and start to do the inspection. To my amazement, I had a loose rocker arm. The exhaust side was loose as a goose. So I pulled them all off inspected the pushrods to be sure and torqued em' all down. She fired right up and no TICK TICK TICK. I am so HAPPY...NO major carnage. The Crane rockers look good and the top of the heads look good also. No oil sludge or anything. I hooked the monster tach, so I can monitor those RPM's better. I think I need to move it just a bit, the yellow shift light is going to blind me. Several folks wanted to know if I really broke something, now you know. Later...

Well, the new transmission in the truck is working. The truck is now just a truck. The tranny shop took out the stall converter along with the shift kit and anything else that was performance related. It has now been put back to stock I can really tell the difference. Oh well, it runs drives and gets me to where I need to go. Now that it is working, I was able to go and pick-up a trailer I won on Ebay.It pulled fantastic on the ride home and didn't even seem like it was behind the truck. I now feel comfortable going to the track. If I break something now, I have a way to get it back home. I fixed some of the wiring and ran wire loom from front to back for all the wiring. I'll look at coating the floor and try to find some fenders. That's it for now....see ya!!!

Well, not having a truck to drive gave me plenty of time today to do some work on the ole' Capri. As you can see the rot is gone from the passenger quarter. I'll keep it a secret exactly how I did it, but it involved no welding. I am pretty proud I got both quarter panels done before winter. I hope I can get the doors on as well. I also need to go get the front clip......Oh wait I can't... I DON'T HAVE MY TRUCK.......AHHHHHHHHHGGGGGG. Its looking pretty good for an amateur. See Ya!!!

This post has nothing to do with the Capri, but everything to do with me. I believe I put one of these in my truck today. The transmission in the truck went to sh%^ today. I am REALLY PISSED OFF. This is money I have to spend on the truck that could be spent on the Capri. I hate the fact that all of the new sh#@ they make today is computer controlled. I said I would post a picture of the Rust Bullet rust paint before I covered it with a topcoat. Well, here it is. As you can see I have some rot on the rear bottom of the quarter panel. The drivers side only had some rot about the size of a quarter. This will require me to do a little more work. The good news is that I have about 7 days of dry weather coming up, so I should have time to complete it. That's it for now..I'm off to my real job. LATER.....

With a pair of Vise Grips and some patients, I was able to get the sway bar on. After getting it on I went out for another ride. Things seem even more stiff and the car is still launching hard with no wheel hop, but I still have the drift. I do have to remember I am doing this on the street and without the Mickey Thompson tires on, so I bet It will perform better at the track. I need to get a camera that I can shoot video, so I can take all you folks for a in-car ride....OH YEAH!!!

Ceramic Coated Headers? Why, yes they are. These will give several benefits to the ole' Capri.
1. Lower underhood temperatures=HORSEPOWER
2. Better engine efficiency=HORSEPOWER
3. Louder exhaust=HORSEPOWER ( A stretch I know)
3. Cleaner engine bay=I HEARD SHINY STUFF MAKES YOU GO FASTER
4. Improved gas mileage=WHAT AM I TALKING ABOUT?
Seriously, I should see a 8-12 horsepower gain when these things are installed. I wanted to take the easy way out and have the local muffler shop install these things. TWO WORDS TODAY HOLY SH$%

What a difference a day makes. My hands still hurt like hell, but the passenger side went much easier. I have included a picture of the stock lower control arm to show what it should look like if bolts don't hassle you. I also included a picture of the suspension on the side that is complete.(I'll do a complete one soon) As you can see the Comp. Eng. 3way adjustable shocks are on set at 50/50. I changed my mind on the rear springs. I did not go with the Moroso rear springs as originally planned. I went with the Laurel Mountain Mustang Brand. Why? Well, I purchased their front drag springs on Ebay awhile back and I found the rear ones after I purchased the Moroso springs. I'll be listing those on Ebay. I should get my money back on those pretty easy. Well, went for a drive. NO WHEEL HOP. I feather the clutch when I launched, the power felt well balanced,it really launched hard. The problem came when I connected with second, it wanted to drift(fishtail). When I got back I noticed that I forgot to install the rear sway bar. Well, I went to install it and it won't fit with the new lower control arm. What am I going to do? I need to go think. LATER......

I would take a picture of my knuckles, but it is hard to take a photo with no hands. OUCH. The good news is the lower control arm battle boxes where any easy install, not the rubic cube troubles that others experienced. Well those of you that know what picture #1 is. Yes, that is part of my stock lower control arm. The rusted bolt got the best of me. I have lived to see another day...the control arm did not. It took me 2 days of work just to get one side done. I should be done with the whole thing. Oh well, hopefully the passenger side goes a little quicker and much easier. By the way, adjustable control arms are a pain in the ass as well. I would go with the factory style solid control arms if I where doing it again. I sure hope that these upgrades make a difference. My knuckles can't take this again. I'm going to go and take a longggggggggggggg hot shower. Later...

Women pay thousands of dollars to get a facelift, lipo, and BOOBIES. I have a tendency to spend a little less on my cosmetic surgery. Thanks to my Marty (brother-in-law) who spent some time teaching me when I was about 14 and my brain for remembering. It took me several days, but this panel doesn't look bad compared to what it looked like in the other photo. We will see how good the Rust Bullet paint really is. I'll take a photo of what this stuff looks like when I do the other quarter panel. The primer and the guide coat ...kinda looks like the Capri is becoming camouflage...Who the hell thought of this color combination? No one to blame except me. SHIFTING GEARS

There is not much of an aftermarket supply of shifters for the old SROD transmissions. Yes, for those of you that know what the SROD transmission is ...I know it is better used as a boat anchor, but it shifts good, pulls strong, and if my sister didn't break it during her driving years, then this thing is going to hold-up ok. It has a fairly new clutch and pressure plate and that is what counts. So, the Hurst shifter handle was about all I could find to give it some life. Also, it has that cool nostalgia feel. Just One More Scoop

I am working on keeping everyone entertained here, so I'll try to post more often, even it is minor. The scoop looks pretty good. I have got about two more sanding/primer sessions before the flat black gets put on. Doing this has reminded my how monotonous body work can be. I have already spent about 4 hours on the scoop. Oh well, time is all I have. LATER.

Another quick post, while I am waiting for the primer to dry. I had some time before going to work today, so I decided to do a little prep work on the hood scoop I plan on installing soon. The scoop is another FREEBIE from my sister and brother-in-law. I plan on doing the "blackout" treatment to the whole hood. I noticed that Hot Rod magazine is promoting the "blackout" hood thing this month. Great....I must be doing the "IN" thing I guess. Oh well, I planned on doing it for a while now, so I am going to stick with it. I want the car to have some 60's ...70's look and feel to it. The scoop should work in keeping fresh air to the carb...along with the dual snorkel air cleaner...It should have all the air it needs. Later for now, time for another coat of primer. SEE YA!!!
